In 2001 an industry initiative called the Super EC (E-commerce) Council, delivered guidelines that called for the standardisation of identification numbers for Superannuation Funds in Australia.

The swimEC awarded APIR^® Systems the contract to develop the system and the resulting SPIN register was delivered early 2002.

The SPIN register now provides industry standard identification for Superannuation funds, a standard that allows participating funds to undertake the e-commerce initiatives outlined by the Super EC (e-commerce) Council and that meet ATO reporting guidelines.
